“Honouring the past & continuing the MC Countrywear story”

MC Countrywear is a proudly Australian business with deep roots in rural and country communities.

Founded and lovingly grown by Margaret Cane, the brand has supported women for many years with comfortable, practical, and timeless clothing.

Today, MC Countrywear continues this tradition under new ownership, with the same values, quality, and care for customers.

In 1992, I made a patchwork skirt for a friend who wore it to work in a boutique clothing store on Sydney’s North Shore. Her boss loved the skirt and asked me to make more to sell. I delivered six skirts on a Saturday, and four sold that same afternoon.

That day, Margaret Cane Clothing was born.

Later that year, a chance conversation with an old school friend in Tamworth introduced me to Field Days, Agricultural Shows, and country fairs. With stock loaded into the family car, I travelled through rural New South Wales and discovered the beauty, resilience, and warmth of country communities.

Over the years, I worked in dusty paddocks, sunny showgrounds, and local community halls. I learned how many stomachs cows have, how to tell the age of a sheep, and how many chickens it takes to buy a blouse. I’ve helped dig trenches to save marquees from flooding, enjoyed countless CWA scones, and met some of the most resourceful and kind-hearted people.

Our collections were equally successful at city markets, school fetes, charity fairs, and retirement villages. For more than 25 years, I also proudly exhibited at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, where our customers were a blend of rural and city women. This inspired our slogan:

“Where country style meets city chic.”

From those first patchwork skirts, our range grew into beautiful, individual blouses made from premium cotton fabrics. All garments were proudly made in Sydney by me and my team of talented women, many of whom worked with me until our retirement.

With the sale of Margaret Cane Clothing to Susana Fuentes, I am delighted that she is continuing our tradition of Australian-made clothing and maintaining our presence at the venues we have loved for over 30 years.

This continuity ensures that our loyal customers will continue to receive unique, high-quality Australian-made garments, preserving the brand’s long-standing reputation in both city and rural communities.
